From 12th October 2025, the European Union is introducing a new Entry/Exit System (EES) for travellers visiting the Schengen Area. This will directly affect UK customers, so it’s important to be aware of how the process works and how to explain it clearly.
We have summarised the key points for you below.
What is the EES?
A new EU border system that digitally records travel in/out of the Schengen Area.
This system will replace passport stamps and will automatically track the 90-in-180-day rule.
Travellers will need to register their fingerprints and a photo at their first entry in the Schengen Area.
What customers need to be aware of:
On first arrival in the Schengen Area, after 12th October 2025: provide fingerprints and a photo at border kiosks.
On later trips (within 3 years): only a fingerprint or photo may be required.
No cost, no online form, no advance action needed.
Please remind your customers:
To allow extra time at ports/airports during the first months of operation – queues are likely.
Ireland and Cyprus are not in Schengen, so they are not affected.
Overstaying beyond 90 days in 180 could lead to penalties – EES will make enforcement easier.
